Revealing the hidden economic and social cost of one of Canada’s most widespread chronic diseases

Not all approaches to measuring social value answer the same question. As interest in social value grows across infrastructure, transportation, energy, housing, and public policy, understanding what different methodologies capture—and what they miss—is critical to making informed decisions.

For decades, public housing has been treated as a cost to manage — a line in a budget to defend or to trim. The Public Housing Dividend asks a different and more important question: what is public housing actually worth to the people who live in it, the communities around it, and the economy as a whole?

Seeing Beyond the Averages At the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis (CANCEA), our mandate is to provide independent, objective, and decision-grade insights. Traditional economic models often rely on top-down historical averages, which can obscure the reality of how people and markets actually behave. By utilizing our ONEMODEL™ platform—a living simulation that reconstructs the behavioural dynamics of the…

You will see how to protect causality, provenance, uncertainty, and accountability while…

Efficiency in the construction and maintenance of Ontario’s roads is vital to the province’s long-term prosperity. With the recent Federal election, the landscape for infrastructure investment has been transformed. The majority Liberal governments in both Queen’s Park and Ottawa have an excellent opportunity to proceed with their plans to invest more than $255 billion collectively in public infrastructure over the next 10 years. Less well understood but at least as crucial is the opportunity to address evidence-driven research…

Housing affordability has become an increasingly serious problem for a growing number of Canadian households. Despite the growing public profile and media interest in this issue, there has been limited appreciation of the broad range of forces creating this problem and the complexity of their interaction. The objective of this CANCEA research was to identify and connect the concepts and factors that contribute to…

Robust population and job projections go hand-in-hand with a holistic understanding of the health of economy, structural changes, infrastructure policy, and economic development, especially given their interconnections. Indeed, the need to connect population and job projections to the changing times is more imperative now than ever before. This is particularly the case in view of the recent decade of precarious…

The Ontario government recently announced a 10-year infrastructure plan entitled Building Together. It promises to build upon the long-term approach to infrastructure investment from the previous ReNew Ontario plan. As a result, the awareness of infrastructure investment in Ontario has increased. However, while the public has an intuitive understanding of the importance of infrastructure to the economic prosperity…

The goals of the current report are: (1) to estimate the life and economic burden in Canada attributed to the incidence of three nosocomial infections; and (2) to demonstrate the value proposition significance if this burden can be reduced by systematic interventions to improve strategies for nosocomial infections control and prevention. The stated goals of the report are achieved by applying a systematic discrete…

For some time, experts have been warning of a deficit between the current state of Canadian infrastructure and what is required—the so-called “infrastructure gap.” And, while it is well known that the quality and quantity of infrastructure has a direct impact upon how efficiently societies are able to operate and grow, individuals and businesses have yet to connect underinvestment in infrastructure to their personal…

This study set out to assess the long-term economic risks of insufficient public infrastructure investment in Canada. Using a 50-year modelling horizon to 2060, it examined how both the level of overall spending and the balance between new construction and maintenance affect GDP, real after-tax wages, and corporate profitability. The work reframed the concept of an “infrastructure deficit” from an abstract…

This is a cause of concern for those responsible for coordinating pandemic responses. Dynamic pandemic modelling can assist resource planners that need to adapt to a pandemic as it unfolds. Since early June, a pandemic model has been periodically fit to soH1N1 Canadian data with resulting…
